Worcester’s Hopmarket – home to an eclectic mix of shops – is organising a series of festive events in the run up to Christmas.

The retail space on The Foregate will welcome back Spare Room Arts on Saturday 2 December; everyone is welcome.

The family friendly event – which runs from 11.00am until 4.00pm – will include a host of Christmas arts and crafts including a sustainable Christmas lantern and cracker making workshop.

This follows on from Spare Room Arts successful summer workshops in the courtyard space.

The event is free.

Other Christmas events will include:

  • Christmas lights switch on, Saturday 25 November at 6.00pm;
  • Peter Cook’s Bread’s traditional bread van will be parked up in the courtyard on Saturday 2 December; the bakery will also be offering free bread tastings, to include bread and other Christmas goodies.  Peter Cooks Bread will also be celebrating its first anniversary – with staff decked out in Victorian costume – with a fabulous raffle; prizes include a luxury Christmas hamper worth £100 and a day’s bread making course worth £185;
  • Aesthetics by Sian will be selling gift vouchers on Saturday 2 December;
  • Worcester Ukulele Band will be playing between 1.30pm until 2.30pm on the same day.

Sarah Edwards, owner of Spare Room Arts said : “We are so looking forward to returning to The Hopmarket this Christmas.  Our events are always hugely popular in this versatile space.  Taking place during the city’s busy Victorian Christmas Fayre, our event will allow families a bit of tranquillity away from the main hustle and bustle of the fayre as well as dedicated – and free! – activities for children to enjoy.”

Bill Simpson, Chairman of The Hopmarket Charitable Trust which manages the site said : “We are delighted to be putting on such a festive extravaganza this Christmas.  As an independent shopping courtyard in the heart of our community, such events are hugely important to us, bringing residents, visitors and shop tenants together. Spare Room Arts ran similar events in August this year.”

The Hopmarket has been a place to do business since 1731 where dealers came to trade hops.  In the early 1900s the site was replaced with the current building to become a hotel and bank before being converted to a thriving shopping courtyard.
